September 16 was celebrated as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone layer under the theme 32 years and healing. The ozone layer is the earth’s natural shield from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays and the theme for this year’s observance signifies the three decades of international cooperation to protect it and the environment under the Montreal Protocol. The Montreal Protocol seeks to ensure countries phase out the production and consumption of ozone depleting substances such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).
