The Office of the Political Ombudsman OPO will be hosting a Forum for Young Leaders on September 20 to commemorate the 14th anniversary of the signing of the Agreement and Declaration on Political Conduct. The Agreement, commonly referred to as the Code, was signed at Gordon House on September 20, 2005, and outlines eight tenets that serve to guide the conduct of persons aspiring for political office. The Forum, to be held at the Courtleigh Hotel in New Kingston, will engage 25 young leaders from across the island who represent various groups and associations.

The National Library of Jamaica NLJ will be staging a series of activities up to December 10 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Louise Bennett Coverley, more affectionately known as ‘Miss Lou’. The events are being hosted as part of the 100 days of celebration to honour Miss Lou, who is widely regarded as the Mother of Jamaican Culture.

‘Tourism and Jobs: a better future for all’- that’s the theme for Tourism Awareness Week, being observed from September 22 to 28 this year. Leading up to World Tourism Day on September 27, the Ministry of Tourism has planned several activities, beginning with a Thanksgiving Service at Church on the Rock in St. Andrew, on Sunday, September 22. Throughout the week, the Ministry will be highlighting traditional and non-traditional jobs available in the sector with the aim of attracting more Jamaicans, encouraging them to take advantage of emerging opportunities.

Ten wards of the State, pursuing tertiary-level education, have been awarded scholarships valued at 40,000 US dollars by Children of Jamaica Outreach Inc. COJO, a New York-based Jamaican charity. The awardees were nominated by Children’s Officers from various children’s homes, based on their academic performance. They are pursuing studies in the field of education, law, nursing, psychology, architecture, and logistics.

More than 1,700 storyboards depicting aspects of the life and work of Jamaica’s late cultural icon, Dr. Louise Bennett-Coverley, will be donated to schools, libraries, Ministries and Diplomatic Missions. This will be facilitated through a partnership between the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport and Fontana Pharmacy. The storyboard also depicts excerpts from Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Minister of Culture, Olivia Grange on how Miss Lou portrayed Jamaican culture and instilled national pride.
