BGA Executes Gender-Sensitive Response in Hurricane Aftermath

Hurricane Melissa caused catastrophic damage in Jamaica, with the World Bank estimating a total of $8.8 billion USD in physical damage, equivalent to 41% of the country’s 2024 GDP, making it Jamaica’s costliest hurricane ever. However few of us pause to weigh the cost in human capital or the lives irrevocably affected by the strongest storm ever to hit the island.

At the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport’s Bureau of Gender Affairs, Principal Director, Scharon Colburn Robinson is counting the cost in pounds and pennies as she leverages local and international connections to ensure that men and women on the ground are getting the gender-sensitive support so desperately needed.
