The Full Story

The four teams advancing to the semifinals of the 2023 Public Sector Debate Competition will face off on Thursday, May 18 as they vie for $2.5 million dollars in cash and prizes.

The Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) will go up against the Jamaica Information Service at 10:00 a.m., while the Victoria Jubilee Hospital will compete against the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service at 11:45 a.m.

Both matches will be held at the Transformation Implementation Unit (TIU) headquarters on Saxthorpe Avenue in St. Andrew. Persons may also watch the live stream on the TIU’s YouTube channel.

The final is set for Wednesday, June 7 at the Jamaica Conference Centre, downtown Kingston.

Communications Lead at the TIU, Anneke Clarke, told JIS News that the semifinalists performed extremely well in the quarter finals, having debated some very exciting moots that are of national importance.

She pointed out that the teams’ performance reflected a high level of research and dedication.

“For the semifinals, there will be another set of thought-provoking moots. The teams will be discussing whether or not the Government should be allowed to access National Housing Trust funds for budgetary support and whether or not persons who squat on lands should have the right to own it,” Ms. Clarke informed.

The competition, which is in its second year, is being organised by the TIU with support from the Jamaican Association for Debating and Empowerment (JADE).

It aims to provide a platform for government officers to share their views and ignite a spirit of engagement to make public-sector transformation more inclusive.
