Professor Evelyn Bailey Elected to the Committee on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Disrimination Against Women Committee

Director for the Centre for Gender and Development Studies, University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona, Professor Evelyn Bailey, has been elected as Jamaica’s representative to the Committee on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW Committee).
Professor Bailey’s election took place on July 30, 2008 in New York, at the United Nations, at the 15th Meeting of State Parties to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
She will be a member of an eleven-person committee, which will be responsible for examining State Parties reports in respect of various aspects of discrimination against women and girls.
Her appointment to the CEDAW Committee, will be effective for the 2009-2012 term (January 2009-December 2012).
The Professor has for a number of years represented Jamaica at the regional and international levels, promoting gender equality issues.
She was recently awarded the 9th CARICOM Triennial Award for Women and is also to be awarded the Order of Jamaica, for her contribution in the field of education and gender studies.
