Prime Minister P.J. Patterson will be the guest of honour at Jamaica’s 43rd Anniversary of Independence Ball at the New York Hilton & Towers Hotel in New York City on Saturday, August 13.
Chairman of the Jamaica Independence Anniversary Ball Committee, Consul General, Dr. Basil K. Bryan told JIS News that the presence of the Prime Minister would provide a big boost to the Independence celebrations being held in the metro New York area, home to the largest concentration of Jamaicans overseas.
“This event not only commemorates one of the defining moments in our nation’s history, it is also a celebration of our efforts to unite the Diaspora, which is now fully recognized as making important contributions toward national development.
It is of course a great opportunity to once again welcome our Prime Minister to celebrate Independence with our community. We feel honoured that he has chosen to be with us as we come together to give thanks for the remarkable strides that our country has made and its impact on the international stage,”Dr. Bryan said.
This year’s ball will be staged under the theme, ‘The Black, Green & Gold (JAM) pays tribute to The Red, White & Blue (USA)’.
“It’s our way of acknowledging the significant achievements of those Jamaicans for whom the United States of America is a home away from home, the kind of environment that continues to inspire our people to higher heights,” Dr. Bryan said.
The event, which anchors the annual celebrations marking the attainment of nationhood on August 6, 1962, attracts more than 1,000 patrons and benefits a number of charities in Jamaica and the USA.
The legendary Byron Lee & The Dragonaires Band, considered by many as the leading show band in the Caribbean region, will provide entertainment. There will also be a silent auction offering patrons anything from an all expense paid Caribbean vacation to wall paintings and fine jewellery.
This year’s celebration will begin with a Thanksgiving Service at the Hanson Place Central United Methodist Church, 144 St. Felix Street, downtown Brooklyn, New York, on Sunday, July 31 beginning at 4:00 p.m.
The service will be hosted by the Reverend Dr. Patrick G. Perrin. The sermon will be delivered by Bishop Sylveta Hamilton-Gonzales of Q-Kingdom Ministries, New York.
Reservations and other information on the ball can be made with the Jamaican Consulate at 212-935-9000.
