Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, has hailed the new Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Rocky Meade, noting that he is very knowledgeable for the task.
Mr. Holness, who was addressing the swearing-in ceremony at King’s House, on December 1, said Major General Meade will ensure continuation of the fine tradition of the army.
The ceremony was presided over by Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen.
“The new Chief of Defence Staff has the knowledge and training to continue building on the solid foundation and development trajectory that has been set by his predecessor,” Mr. Holness told the gathering.
Major General Meade succeeds Major General Antony Anderson, who has retired from the position after six years, and 32 years in the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).
Mr. Anderson has been appointed the country’s first National Security Advisor.
The Prime Minister said the smooth transition of the leadership of the army speaks to the excellence of the organisation and the value of succession planning.
“I have confidence that the legacy of the JDF and its value and relevance to Jamaica will continue as new demands and circumstances arise,” Mr. Holness added.
The Prime Minister said the army is known for discipline, and plays a strategic role in the nation’s development and its security.
For his part, Major General Meade, while lauding his predecessor for “sterling leadership” of the JDF, said he will be relying on members of the JDF to provide the best possible security as the country works to achieve the 2030 development goals.
“I won’t be able to accomplish this task on my own, and I look forward to guidance from the lowest to the highest levels in the army,” the Major General said.
