Prime Minister, the Hon. Bruce Golding, has underscored the importance of good customer service within the public service, adding that the recently established Public Sector Transformation Unit will be paying keen attention to this area.
He emphasised that there is need for a complete transformation in thinking within the civil service, where every public servant can fully appreciate the fact that his or her job is to serve the public.
The Prime Minister was giving the keynote address at the 10th anniversary ceremony of the Mega Mart establishment, held at the Catherine Hall store, in Montego Bay, St. James, on December 12.
“If we have to step on corns, and if we have to beat pathways that have never been beaten before, I am determined that we must get to the stage where every civil servant will understand that if you don’t satisfy the customer, your job is going to be on the line,” he stressed.

Mr. Golding said that until that approach is clearly understood, the necessary responsiveness will not be forthcoming.
Using the success of the Mega Mart establishment as an example, the Prime Minister argued that there are valuable lessons to be learnt from that progress, which includes the importance of hard work, discipline, good customer service and good management.
He said that the attitude among some civil servants that they are doing persons a favour when Government services are being utilised must stop, and a new and revolutionary thinking process adopted.
Mega Mart is the first wholesale membership club established in Jamaica, with stores in Portmore St. Catherine, Kingston and Montego Bay.
