Prime Minister, The Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller has commended Alcoa Aluminum Company for its commitment in investing in Jamaica.”Jamaica is indeed proud to have the world’s premier aluminum company as a partner and investor,” she said.
Delivering the keynote address at the Alcoa Women’s Network Second Global Leadership two-day Conference for Alcoa’s senior management women on Tuesday, October 24, at the Reston Hyatt Hotel in Virginia, the Prime Minister said Alcoa’s commitment to Jamaica has spanned 47 years, noting that it was in 1959 that Alcoa first established roots in the economic, cultural and social life of Jamaica.
Mrs. Simpson Miller emphasized that this relationship has grown from strength to strength and Alcoa has remained steadfast in its commitment.
“As a good corporate citizen, Alcoa has demonstrated community outreach with a concern for social development,” she said, adding that the company was well recognized as an important driver of the Jamaican economy before the country achieved its independence from Great Britain and to date, Alcoa is still making its contribution to the economy.
The Prime Minister appealed to the Alcoa Women’s Network to take a special interest in Jamaica and to share their expertise in building networks, links and strategies that would assist the country to move forward on the global stage.
Judith Nocito, Assistant General Counsel for Alcoa Women’s Network (AWN), said the objective of the conference is to give participants a broadened perspective of global dynamics, through exposure to renowned experts in the field, as well as Alcoa leaders.
“We are excited that Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller accepted our invitation to address our conference, as we see her as one of the outstanding and dynamic women in a leadership position around the world,” she said.
The AWN was formed in 2001 by a group of executive women in the company, who felt it was important for women in leadership positions to come together to provide a catalyst for the further development and advancement of other women in the company.
Accompanying Mrs. Simpson Miller were Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, Professor Gordon Shirley and Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Carlton Davis.
