Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, broke ground for a major housing development project, consisting of 1,400 new houses in Barrett Hall, St. James, on April 10.

Addressing the ceremony, Dr. Holness said the initiative is a vital step towards addressing Jamaica’s pressing housing deficit, which currently stands at approximately 150,000 units.

“Today marks a pivotal moment in our ongoing commitment to provide affordable housing solutions for all Jamaicans,” he told the gathering.

“We recognise the urgent need for accessible housing, and this development is a clear demonstration of our dedication to closing the housing gap while fostering sustainable growth,” the Prime Minister said.

Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, addresses the ground-breaking ceremony for a major housing project consisting of 1,400 units in Barrett Hall, St. James, on April 10.

He pointed out that the new housing project is designed to offer a variety of affordable home options, catering to diverse income levels and family sizes, adding that it will not only provide homes but also create jobs and stimulate the local economy, particularly in the tourism sector, which is a cornerstone of St. James’ economic landscape.

Dr. Holness also emphasised the importance of understanding the specific needs of communities “before we embark on projects”, noting that this housing development is strategically located in the tourism belt, making it ideal for tourism workers.

“This project not only addresses the housing deficit but also provides a suitable living environment for those who are integral to the tourism industry. As more individuals come to St. James seeking opportunities in this vital sector, we want to ensure they have secure and affordable housing options available,” he said.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the challenges that have persisted in the housing sector but reassured the public that the Government is actively working to overcome these obstacles.

“We are aware that the journey towards adequate housing for all Jamaicans is not without its hurdles. However, with strategic planning and fiscal responsibility, we are paving the way for a brighter future,” he added.

He said the Barrett Hall housing initiative aligns with the Government’s broader vision of fostering sustainable development across Jamaica, adding that by integrating environmentally friendly practices and materials in construction, the project aims to set a precedent for future developments in the region.

The Prime Minister reiterated the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship, ensuring that Jamaica’s natural resources are preserved for future generations.
Dr. Holness also encouraged the community to remain engaged and informed throughout the development process.

“We want to hear your voices and understand your needs as we move forward with this project. Your input is invaluable as we strive to create a community that reflects the aspirations of all its residents,” he said.

Dr. Holness said the Government remains committed to ensuring that every Jamaican has access to safe and affordable housing, noting that the launch of this “significant housing development in Barrett Hall” is further indication that the Administration is taking decisive action to not only address the housing deficit but also to uplift the quality of life for all Jamaicans.
