Jamaica Tertiary Education Commission (J-TEC) launches the Tertiary Education Enhancing Workforce Development through Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) programme.

The Jamaica Tertiary Education Commission (J-TEC) is pleased to announce the launch of a tertiary education sector Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) programme aimed at advancing workforce development.

The programme will recognize and certify learning, skills and knowledge gained outside formal education and training systems, as well as facilitating further educational and professional opportunities for
Jamaicans.

Key Events:

1. School Cafeteria Staff Certification

– Date: Friday, July 12, 2024

– Time: 10:00 a.m.

– Venue: George Headley Primary School

– Details: This event will celebrate the certification of school-based food service workers who participated in a pilot project to certify individuals through PLAR. This initiative was executed in collaboration with George Headley Primary School, Duhaney Park Primary School, the Institute of Workforce Education and Development (IWED), and City and Guilds. It aligns with the Ministry of Education and Youth’s emphasis on the development of people through certification.

2. Launch of Professional and Continuing Education programme inclusive of the initial certification of PLAR Advisors and Institutional Research Officers.

– Date: Wednesday, July 17, 2024

– Time: 10:00 a.m.

– Venue: The Vocational Training and Development Institute (VTDI)

– Details: This event will publicly celebrate the first cohorts of tertiary education institutional staff who have completed training as PLAR Advisors and in Institutional Research. These training activities are part of J-TEC’s Professional and Continuing Education Programme, designed to build the capacity of members of staff throughout the tertiary education sector.  Training partners include VTDI and MIND.
