Residents of Portmore, St. Catherine, are being urged to come out in their numbers to participate in the Labour Day project for the municipality, which will involve painting and other improvements along George Lee Boulevard.
Mayor of Portmore, Councillor Leon Thomas, told JIS News that the workday will begin at 7:00 a.m, on Friday, May 23.
“We start from the vicinity of the Portmore Mall and we are taking it to the Waterford traffic light. We will be at the Portsmouth community heading to the traffic light. We are putting in that sidewalk and we are also planting trees in the Portsmouth community,” he informed.
“We are providing brushes but if you have a paintbrush you can walk with it because we will be… brightening all those areas straight along the George Lee Boulevard to the intersection of Waterford,” Mayor Thomas added.
The project is a continuation of the Portmore Municipal Corporation’s Sidewalk Programme, which started three years ago and is being undertaken in phases.
In addition to the municipal project, Mayor Thomas pointed out that several citizen’s associations have also registered Labour Day projects and will receive support for their initiatives.
“They are engaging in beautification, tree-planting exercises, upgrading of their parks and also cleaning their open lots,” he told JIS News.
“I am encouraging our citizens and our service clubs and youth clubs across the municipality to get out and take part in their community projects, and people who want to join with the Portmore Municipality can also join us,” added Mayor Thomas.
