Portland Showcasing the Breadfruit at Denbigh

August 1, 2008

The Full Story

The versatility of the breadfruit is the main focus of Portland’s participation in this year’s Denbigh Agricultural and Industrial Show in Clarendon, being held from August 1 to 3.
Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) Parish Manager in Portland, Miss Thelma Williams, told JIS News that this strategy is being employed to sensitise Jamaicans about the breadfruit as a source for by-products and to highlight the financial gains that could be made from its production.
She pointed out that the breadfruit is one of the most under utilized agricultural products in the country, adding that the JAS and other agencies in Portland have, for a long time, been using the fruit as a source for several other products, including flour, cake, wine, raisin, porridge and breadfruit drops.
Miss Williams said that demonstrations would also be done to familiarise patrons with how the by-products are manufactured. She also noted that the parish would be highlighting banana, plantain and pumpkin production.
She said that everything would be done to ensure that the parish improves on the sixth position it received at last year’s show, adding that the JAS branches in the communities have been fully mobilized for the event and have been participating enthusiastically in the effort to secure exhibits for the event.
