Port Royal Road to be Closed
December 26, 2009The Full Story
The Port Royal Road will be closed today (December 26), from 10:45 p.m. until 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 27, to facilitate removal of the tail section of the American Airlines aircraft, which overshot the runway at the Norman Manley International Airport on December 22.
A crane will be deployed to carry out the removal exercise at the site, which is located across from the runway at the airport, and this has necessitated the closure of the road.
The aircraft, carrying 148 passengers, plus a crew of six, from Miami USA, ended up on the beach across the road from the airport. There were no fatalities.
Director of Flight Safety at the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority, Nari Williams-Singh, and a team from the Authority are leading the investigations into the incident, assisted by a six-member team from the United States (US) National Transportation Safety Board.
Seven representatives from American Airlines have also arrived in the island from Puerto Rico, to assist with the dismantling of the aircraft.
