Police Commissioner Gets Full Support from Government

February 24, 2012

The Full Story

Police Commissioner, Owen Ellington, continues to enjoy the Government’s full support and confidence, as Head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

This assurance came from National Security Minister, Hon. Peter Bunting, at a press briefing at Jamaica House on February 21.

The Minister expressed satisfaction with the Commissioner’s performance in the drive which has resulted in a reduction in crime, particularly murders, and the JCF’s overall execution of the administration’s crime fighting strategies.

Mr. Bunting said during his first week on the job (in January), following his Ministerial appointment, he met with Mr. Ellington and other representatives of the officer corps, during which he made it “very clear” that the administration had reposed confidence in the Commissioner.

“He has been successful, and we expect him to continue that success. And, he will get the support of myself, as Minister, and of the administration. We want him to be confident in prosecuting the operations for which he has responsibility…He has the policy support of the Government,” the Minister declared.

Quoting statistics to support his position, Mr. Bunting pointed out that 30 murders were recorded over the period January 1 to February 18, this year, which, although a little over the figure for the corresponding period in 2011,  was “substantially better” relative to 2010 and 2009.

For his part, Commissioner Ellington said he has no intention of quitting his position any time soon, quipping that he “can’t afford to.”
