The police and community members have cleared debris from the roadway leading to the St. Catherine-based Guanaboa Vale Primary School, caused by the passage of Hurricane Melissa on October 28.
During a community workday, today (November 3), to restore normalcy in the aftermath of the storm, Head of the Guanaboa Vale Police, Sergeant Navelette Davis-Leachman, told JIS News in an interview that “we saw the need to clear the road, as we are trying to prevent motor-vehicle collisions”.
“Based on the fact that the bridge is very narrow, we wanted to clear the debris so that motorists are able to pass freely. I am elated that I got the full support from my team, and it is a pleasure having everyone on board,” she added.
Sergeant Davis-Leachman said she was also pleased with the community members’ involvement in the initiative.
“This will help in boosting our community engagement, where the citizens will realise that we are here not just to arrest but to actually serve the community in a meaningful way,” she said.
For her part, Principal of the school, Tracey-Ann Brown, said clearing the roadway will make it safer for motorists and her students.
“After the passage of Hurricane Melissa, we had a lot of debris on the road, and it rendered us having to use one lane, which posed a problem for motorists and pedestrians,” she said.
For teacher at the institution, Candice Graham Griffiths, the gesture by the officers and community members was appreciated.
“When vehicles are coming up and down on the roadway, you normally have a lot of them stopping and persons trying to push forward before each other, because of the small space. Now it is a good look for the community,” she said.
The Guanaboa Vale Police serve the communities of Kitson Town, Content, Dover, Cherry, Fletcher, Old Road, Byles, Bendon, Top Mountain, Paul’s Mountain, Green Acres, Fairview Park, and Ebony Vale.
