The Full Story

Jamaicans are being urged to support each other as communities recover from the impact of Hurricane Beryl.

Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, in making the call, said that while the Government has a very important role to play in times of disaster, “never forget that it is the community first that has this duty to protect itself and the people within it”.

“I don’t want you to feel powerless like you can’t do anything unless the government does; that doesn’t work. When I hear stories [of persons helping their neighbours] that is to be encouraged and promoted,” he said.

The Prime Minister was addressing residents at the Rocky Point Fishing Village during a tour of three severely impacted Southern Clarendon communities on July 6.

The other areas were Portland Cottage and Mitchell Town.

“Remember now, all of you, no matter your situation you can do something, and we have to encourage everyone who can, to do. The Government is going to come in but if the Government and the people are working together it will be much better,” the Prime Minister told the residents.

Regarding recovery assistance, the Prime Minister said the Government is working to address needs as quickly as possible.

He told the residents, most of whom are fisherfolk, that the Administration will be looking at “how best we can build some resilience in terms of a generator and storage system so that you don’t lose in a hurricane.”
