His Majesty Juan Carlos I, The King of Spain, has decided to bestow on Prime Minister P.J. Patterson the award of the Grand Cross of the National Order of Civil Merit. News of the decision, which was approved by the Cabinet of Spain, was communicated in a letter to Prime Minister Patterson by the Spanish Ambassador to Jamaica, H.E. Jesus Silva, today (March 24, 2006).
The award is in recognition of Mr. Patterson’s fourteen years as Head of Government and his “tireless efforts aimed at strengthening the relations between Spain and CARICOM as (his) outstanding contribution to regional integration and the peaceful political stability of Jamaica and the countries of the Caribbean”, the letter reads.
The Prime Minister was also credited with helping to deepen relations between Spain and Jamaica by encouraging Spanish investments in Jamaica. “Over 10,000 new direct jobs for the Jamaican economy are expected to be created in the coming years with the construction of the Spanish resorts in the island’s tourist’s areas”, the letter to Mr. Patterson stated.
