The Full Story

Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, has expressed gratitude for the rapid response and steadfast commitment demonstrated by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and international partners in the wake of Hurricane Melissa.

Speaking during a stop in Whitehouse, Westmoreland, on Monday (November 17), during a goodwill tour of some of the hardest-hit parishes, the Prime Minister said the regional and global support has been critical in the aftermath of the hurricane and will be crucial as the country rebuilds.

“The combined efforts of regional leaders and development institutions will accelerate relief, rescue, and early recovery activities, ensuring that affected Jamaicans receive timely assistance,” the Prime Minister said, adding that the collaboration is instrumental in aligning resources with the country’s needs, ensuring transparent, efficient, and equitable delivery of assistance.

The goodwill mission comprised several CARICOM Heads of Government and major international organisations.

The delegation included the Prime Ministers of Barbados, Grenada, and Antigua and Barbuda, as well as the President of Guyana.

President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and country representatives from the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), the World Bank, and other partner agencies were also in attendance.

The Prime Minister, who is chair of CARICOM, said he is encouraged by the strong show of support and solidarity from the regional and international partners.

“With Heads of Government and other representatives from key development and financial institutions on the ground with us, this is truly an all-hands-on-deck effort,” he noted.

“Their willingness to be here, to listen, and to witness, first-hand, the challenges facing our people, speaks to the strength of our shared commitment,” he added.
