PIOJ Staging Exhibition on Jamaica’s Demographic Landscape
By: , March 21, 2026The Full Story
The Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) is staging a roving exhibition aimed at stimulating public discourse on the nation’s evolving demographic landscape.
Grounded in the National Population and Sustainable Development Policy, the exhibition’s content was developed by technical specialists and experts within the PIOJ, who have graphically presented data and policy highlights in a format that is accessible to a general audience.
It was first held on February 26 in Kingston during the PIOJ’s Dialogue for Development Lecture Series 2026, titled: ‘Harnessing the Shift: Reimagining a Sustainable Future’.
Through evidence-based presentations and meaningful discussions, the session proposed policy actions aimed at supporting sustainable national development.
Jamaica is currently experiencing a pivotal shift in its population structure, with a larger proportion of working-age individuals relative to children and older persons who are dependents.
This transition presents a sizeable workforce available to contribute to development before reaching retirement age, while preparing the nation for a future where a smaller working-age population will be required to support an ageing society.
The exhibition highlights three key pillars of development – the natural environment, examined within the urgent context of climate change; the economy, which explores strategies for robust growth and fiscal resilience; and social security, which addresses the requirements for supporting individuals who depend on others due to extreme youth or old age, disability or infirmity.
The exhibition is currently on display in the PIOJ lobby at 16 Oxford Road in Kingston and will be showcased at selected locations across the island until the end of the year.
Members of the public are invited to visit the exhibit at the PIOJ Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Groups of more than four persons are required to make a reservation in advance for an interpretive tour.
Information on where the exhibition will next be staged will be posted on the PIOJ’s social media platforms. Persons may also send queries via email to info@pioj.gov.jm with “Exhibition” in the subject field.
