The National Land Agency (NLA) is encouraging persons to seek legal advice in their quest to acquire certificates of title for land.

Addressing a JIS ‘Think Tank’ on October 29, Acting Registrar of Titles at the NLA,  Cheriese Walcott,  said that the process to getting a title can be very tedious and persons may need extra support from an attorney.

“We always encourage persons to get legal advice regarding the documents to be submitted and how to prepare them. This is one application that as much as you may have an idea of the law, if you are not an attorney, do not attempt it on your own,” she cautioned.

If persons are unable to afford attorneys, Ms. Walcott said  they are referred to the Land Administration and Management Programme (LAMP), a government initiative that assists land owners to obtain certificates of title.

She also pointed out that an issue with land registration in Jamaica is the lack of proper documentation.

“On average, the NLA receives 3,000 applications for titles, 80 per cent of which are processed based on the presentation of proper documentation,” she said, adding that a lot of persons do not keep records.

“There is no documentation, they just orally leave property from one person to the other and legally that is not sufficient,” she informed.

Detailed information on submitting applications for certificates of title can be found on the NLA’s website, www.nla.gov.jm
