The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) is encouraging persons who have never been registered at birth to take advantage of its Operation Birthright programme, which assists eligible individuals in securing legal birth registration.
Manager for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics at NIRA, Monique Morris, said the initiative provides a pathway for persons who were never registered to establish their legal identity and access important services and opportunities.
Mrs. Morris explained that individuals who believe they were never registered at birth can apply through NIRA’s website at https://nira.gov.jm/ or visit any NIRA office for assistance.
As part of the process, NIRA first conducts a search to confirm that there is no existing birth registration for the applicant.
“If we determine that there is no birth record, we will guide the individual through the process of providing the information needed to complete the registration,” Mrs. Morris told JIS News.
For persons born in hospitals, this may include a hospital notification of birth, while those born at home may be required to submit declarations and/or any other supporting documents, where available.
Mrs. Morris said that in cases where supporting records cannot be located, declarations may be accepted, provided they are properly completed and verified.
She is encouraging eligible persons who have never been registered at birth to contact NIRA to learn more about the programme and the requirements for applying.
Operation Birthright forms part of NIRA’s efforts to ensure that all Jamaicans have access to legal identity and the documentation needed to fully participate in society.
