A special donation, collected at the church for Hurricane Beryl victims, was handed over to the JRC.

The Full Story

Persons attending this year’s festival activities can make monetary donations to finance relief assistance for victims of Hurricane Beryl.

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) has partnered with the Jamaica Red Cross (JRC) to collect donations at events organised by the Commission.

National President of the Jamaica Red Cross, Allasandra Chung, told JIS News that volunteers will be on hand with JRC-labelled collection tins and boxes.

She noted that about $100,000 has been collected for events already staged, including the Jamaica Festival Song Competition and the Emancipation and Independence Thanksgiving Church Service.

“We want to thank persons for the contributions they have given. Also, we are saying to persons, you need to assist us to assist your brothers and sisters, your aunts and uncles, your grandmothers and grandfathers,” Ms. Chung said.

She also expressed gratitude to JCDC Executive Director, Lenford Salmon, who presented the idea for the  special collection at festival events.

“We had a fulsome discussion about what we do, how we do it, what will be required and how it would be implemented,” she said.

Donations can also be dropped off at the JRC’s National headquarters, Central Village, St Catherine, or at any of its 13 branches islandwide.

Persons may contribute online through the JRC’s website, www.jamaicaredcross.org.  Potential donors may also call 876-984-7860-2 for further information.

JRC volunteers will be at the Emancipation Jubilee slated for Seville Heritage Park in Priory, St Ann, from July 31 into August 1, and the Independence Village at the National Stadium Complex from August 3 to 6.

Funds will also be collected at the Grand Gala on August 6 and at nightly events, at the Village such as the Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Coronation, August 3; Jamaica Gospel Star Finale & Gospel Praise Concert, August 4 and the Mello-Go-Roun, August 5.
