Parents Urged to Play Active Role in Children’s Education

Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Andrew Swaby, is encouraging parents and guardians to play an active role in their children’s education and foster a positive learning environment.

“It is important to know your child’s teacher and to be involved beyond just providing lunch money and buying books. Help with homework, attend school events and support your child’s learning journey. Your involvement makes a big difference in their success,” he said.

The Mayor, who was addressing the recent meeting of the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC), held in the Marcus Garvey Council Chamber, downtown Kingston, commended teachers for their dedication in shaping Jamaica’s future leaders and innovators.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the teachers who continue to make sacrifices for the betterment of our children,” he said.

He noted that the KSAMC assisted in preparing students for the resumption of school through the annual back-to-school programme.

“While the needs are great and our resources are limited, nonetheless we are grateful that we could have executed our annual back-to-school programme. This allowed us as councillors to assist students in need with books or tuition support. We wish our students a successful year filled with knowledge and friendship and remind them that their hard work will pay off,” he said.

The Mayor extended condolences to the family of young Trayvon Sanchez, who was killed in a motor-vehicle crash on the first day of the new academic year and expressed best wishes for the full recovery of his mother, who was driving the car involved in the fatal crash.
