The Papine High School, as part of activities to mark its 50th anniversary, on Tuesday (Dec. 16), staged an awards function to recognise the invaluable contributions of staff and other supporters.
At the ceremony held at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston, 72 current employees and three organisations were honoured for service to the institution between five and 36 years. The function was held under the theme: ‘Diligence: Laying the Foundation for Excellence’.
President of the University of Technology (UTech), Professor Errol Morrison, who was the guest speaker at the event, commended the awardees for their sterling contributions, and urged them to continue their outstanding service to the school.
“For those of you who are being recognised here tonight, I must applaud you on the attitude of perseverance. (and) the attitude of being able to serve. Excellence is not an act but a habit…and so that is the kind of lifestyle, direction, that kind of activity that we expect,” he stated.
He further commended the institution on its achievements over the years and for recognising the awardees.
In the meantime, Professor Morrison called for further collaboration among the major stakeholders in the Papine area for the development of the community. “We firmly believe that we should be beacons to improve the quality of life in that whole area…we all have to be proactive to ensure that the quality of life of those individuals in that area is assisted as far as we can,” he stated.
Senior Education Officer at the Secondary Unit at the Ministry of Education, Sonia Robinson Glanville, in her remarks, noted that 50 years of operation is a significant milestone for any institution.
She pointed out that the camaraderie at Papine High has been excellent over the years and has helped to propel the growth and success of the institution.
For his part, Member of Parliament for St. Andrew Eastern, Dr. St. Aubyn Bartlett, congratulated the awardees, pointing out that “you have done well…you have stuck to the tasks and Papine (High) has done better because of the service you have given.”
The institution, which is located in St. Andrew Eastern, was established in 1958 and currently has 168 staff members.
