Prime Minister P.J. Patterson has extended his personal appreciation to Opposition Leader Edward Seaga for his contribution to Jamaica and has accorded him his best wishes as he demits office to take up research and academic duties at the University of the West Indies. Mr. Patterson made the remarks during a courtesy call paid on him by the Opposition Leader at Jamaica House on Tuesday (Jan. 11).
The Prime Minister stated that there were a number of Constitutional Amendments and legislative issues he had hoped to complete with the Opposition Leader but said that these would now have to be pursued with the Opposition when its new Leader is chosen.
In agreement, Mr. Seaga said the country was not limitless in how it could discharge its duties on the political platform and that he therefore intends to continue to make his contribution to national development from another sphere.
Prime Minister Patterson said the House of Representatives would publicly recognize Mr. Seaga’s contribution at a special sitting on January 18, a day before his resignation becomes effective.
