Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, says the opening of a new US$900,000 catheterisation laboratory (cath lab) at the Hospiten private health facility in Rose Hall, St. James, is a massive boost for Jamaica’s growing health tourism sector.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony on February 21, Mr. Bartlett emphasised that this state-of-the-art facility will enhance Jamaica’s appeal as a prime destination for health tourists.

He also highlighted the growing global health tourism industry, valued at more than US$1 trillion, and its importance as a value-added component of Jamaica’s tourism offering.

“The possibilities for health tourism loom large, and not just because of this particular laboratory. The increasing demand for high-quality healthcare, combined with our beautiful island’s natural allure, positions Jamaica as a significant centre for medical tourism,” he noted.

The Minister said that the newly opened cath lab not only expands the range of medical services available at Hospiten but also aligns with the increasing expectations of international visitors seeking comprehensive healthcare solutions while enjoying their vacation.

“Visitors are more inclined to choose destinations that provide them with the same quality of healthcare they receive at home. The addition of this facility is a game-changer for our marketing efforts,” Mr. Bartlett added.

The Minister said the facility will allow for advanced cardiovascular responses, ensuring that patients receive timely and effective treatment.

“In cases of emergencies, the ability to provide immediate, high-quality care can significantly impact patient outcomes and enhance Jamaica’s reputation as a health tourism destination,” he emphasised.

Mr. Bartlett’s remarks come at a time when the demand for health services is rapidly increasing globally.

The Minister noted that health tourism encompasses a wide range of medical services, from elective surgeries to urgent care, and the new laboratory will play a crucial role in meeting these diverse needs.

“Patients with ailments seek destinations where they can have fun, while also receiving quality treatment,” he said, reinforcing the idea that “health and leisure can go hand in hand.”

“The opening of the cath lab is not only a significant investment in healthcare but also represents a strategic move towards diversifying Jamaica’s tourism offerings. By integrating health services into our tourism portfolio, we can attract new visitors and create additional revenue streams for our economy,” Mr. Bartlett added.

He said the Government is committed to fostering an environment conducive to health tourism, recognising its potential to enhance the local economy and improve healthcare access for residents.
