A Jamaica 60 flag raising ceremony will be held in Old Harbour Square in Old Harbour, St. Catherine on Sunday (July 31), starting at 3:30 p.m.The event is organised by the Old Harbour Zone Cultural Committee in partnership with the South St. Catherine Chamber of Commerce (SSCC).

It will include a march past by uniformed groups led by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

President of the SSCC and Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Shades of Elegance Limited, Treacha Reid, told JIS News that the flag raising ceremony is part of activities to amplify the significance of Emancipation and Independence at the local level and restore national pride.

Ms. Reid noted that business owners have been encouraged to decorate their storefronts in the national colours “and Old Harbour is looking great now.”She told JIS News that on August 6 there will be a float parade starting at the Civic Centre in Old Harbour Square through to Old Harbour Bay where it will culminate in the annual kite festival.

Ms. Reid is urging residents to come out and enjoy the festivities.

“It is important that we embrace our culture, it is important that we celebrate Jamaica. We need to come together in our communities, come together as a country and celebrate with love,” she said.

“I want the residents of Old Harbour and surrounding communities to know that they don’t have to go to Kingston or Montego Bay to celebrate independence, so we are creating our own activities to ensure that we can celebrate and have a good time” she added.

Jamaica 60 is being celebrated under the theme: ‘Re-igniting a Nation for Greatness’.
