The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is advising that considerable progress has been realized in the control and confinement of the tyre fire that has been burning at the Riverton City Disposal site since Sunday.

Actions:

  • A significant section of the facility that was on fire has been covered with soil, thereby minimizing the risk of further spread and suppressing residual bouts of smoke
  • 24 hours operational presence has been maintained at the location, with the Jamaica Fire Brigade operating as the primary responder.
  • Steps towards assessing air quality have commenced.

The ODPEM is reminding persons that the area remains off limit for non-emergency response activities.  A further advisory is being issued for caution to be exercised when handling naked flame to avert similar occurrences especially against the background of the dry spell that the Kingston Metropolitan Region is experiencing.

Fire Safety Tips:

  • Avoid smoking in public areas
  • Keep matches and lighters up high, out of the reach of children.
  • Replace cords that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs, or have loose connections.
  • Keep candles at least one foot from anything that can burn. Blow out candles when you leave the room or go to sleep.
