The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is advising that as the wind direction changes towards the South, persons in or around the general Portmore region may experience an occasional increase in smoke cover as a result of the smothering of the fire.
The conditions at the Riverton Disposal Site are continually improving. Â As efforts are made to extinguish the fire, a large section of the enflamed area is expected to be either extinguished or contained.
All unauthorized persons are advised that they will not be permitted to enter the disposal site. However, the facility is still functioning for routine use as the collection site is still operational.
Tips for Protecting Yourself
- Avoid undue exposure to the smoke by closing windows and doors.
- Use a clean wet rag to cover your nose and mouth to minimize the effects of the smoke.
- The elderly, children and those with respiratory issues should pay particular attention not to exposing themselves to the smoke.
