The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) on Thursday (August 27), received a US$25,000 (J$2.2 million) donation from the Government of Mexico, to support the reconstruction efforts in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Gustav, which lashed the island in August of 2008.
Mexican Ambassador to Jamaica, Her Excellency Lenora Rueda, presented the cheque to Director General of ODPEM, Mr. Ronald Jackson, at a ceremony which took place at the agency’s offices on Camp Road.
Accepting the grant, Mr. Jackson said the agency was very appreciative of the kind gesture by the Government of Mexico.
“This money will help shore up our account as we move to relocate the 400 persons who lost their entire houses during the passage of the tropical storm,” the Director General said.
Approximately 2,000 houses were affected, of which 400 were totally destroyed, and the persons relocated.
