The Full Story

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has crafted a national road map, aimed at strengthening the country’s capacity to mitigate the effects of earthquakes.

The road map, developed in conjunction with United Nations development partners, addresses the preparation for, response and recovery from seismic activity.

“This road map serves as a guiding document for improving the resilience of critical facilities …and improving seismic safety,” said Acting Director General, ODPEM, Richard Thompson.

He was speaking at yesterday’s (January 7) launch of Earthquake Awareness Month at the agency’s Haining Road offices in Kingston.

Mr. Thompson said the development of the document forms part of efforts to build seismic readiness and resilience across the country, boost response capacities as well as mitigate impacts from these hazards.

Mr. Thompson said ODPEM has continued efforts towards “rapid visual screening” of critical infrastructure across the island to ensure the safety of citizens, as well as persons tasked with the response mandate in the event of an earthquake.

He noted as well that ODPEM recognises the role of each citizen in earthquake resilience and is therefore urging participation in the activities being organised for Earthquake Awareness Month.

The month is being observed under the theme: ‘Community Strengthening and Awareness…A Recipe for Building Earthquake Resilience’.
