The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), in collaboration with the Meteorological Service of Jamaica is maintaining a state of vigilance, while reviewing the country’s readiness as Hurricane Danny strengthens and moves closer to the Caribbean.

Information from the National Hurricane Center at 2:00 pm had the center of Hurricane Danny located near latitude 14.3N 48.6W or about 900 miles…1450 Km East of the Leeward Islands. Danny is now a Category 3 hurricane packing winds of 185 km/h (115mph). The system is expected to fluctuate in strength, becoming a Tropical Storm or possibly a Tropical Depression as it tracks through the Caribbean. On the projected path, the system could influence weather conditions in Jamaica in the latter part of next week.

The public is being advised to use this period to review their personal preparedness and readiness for response.

The national disaster management mechanism has been alerted. Parish Disaster Coordinators have been notified. Liaison has commenced with national primary responders and the National Disaster Sub Committees.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates to the public.

Hurricane Tips

ï‚· Acquaint yourself with the evacuation routes between your house and the nearest shelter.

ï‚· Have proper tools, supplies, and a first aid kit.

ï‚· Check on the adequacy of your emergency supplies kit

ï‚· Always have non-perishable foods on hand.

ï‚· Be prepared to evacuate if you live in flood prone or low-lying areas.

ï‚· Make sure you have fuel and water.

ï‚· Monitor your radio and television for weather updates.

ï‚· Identify a safe room in the house in the event of impact
