ODPEM Activates the National Emergency Operations Centre

Following the meeting of the National Disaster Committee (NDC) convened at the Office of the Prime Minister on Wednesday June 10, 2013, chaired by the Honourable Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has activated the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) at level 1.
The Prime Minister head of the NDC after receiving updates from the members of the National Response Team, including the ODPEM, Meteorological Service of Jamaica,National Works Agency, Ministry of Health, Jamaica Defence Force, and the Jamaica Constabulary Force, instructed that all Parish Disaster Committees and political representatives (Government and Opposition) be placed on high alert and activate their emergency response protocols.
The NEOC was activated in response to Tropical Storm Chantal which could impact Jamaica as early as tonight as the system passes in the vicinity of the island. The main threat is outbreaks of showers and thunderstorms which is likely to develop over the island, starting with eastern parishes, during the course of the night and into Thursday.
