The National Centre for Youth Development (NCYD) is advising persons interested in filling the positions of ‘Youth Ambassadors’ at the national, regional, and commonwealth levels that the deadline for making their submissions is October 31.
In an interview with JIS News, Executive Director of the NCYD, Ohene Blake, informed that the positions were open to young people, between the ages of 15 and 24 years old, with the exception of the Commonwealth Youth Ambassadors whose age limit extends to 29.
He pointed out that whilst the positions for National Youth Ambassadors were based on a nomination process (which is done by their peers), interested persons must make applications on their own behalf in order to fill the positions of CARICOM and Commonwealth Ambassadors.
Upon being short-listed, the applicant and/or nominee will be required to attend an interview, make a presentation on a topic that deals specifically with the portfolio for which he/she has applied, as well as submit a research paper that provides general information on the particular portfolio. The portfolios up for this year are health, culture, education and the environment.
“In order to be selected,” Mr. Blake emphasized, “candidates must have in-depth knowledge of the particular portfolio for which they are applying and they will also be required to commit the necessary time towards their ambassadorships.”
After being selected, Ambassadors will become advocates for the youth of Jamaica by speaking on their behalf, and representing them on a number of issues in various forums.
They will also be required to disseminate information to the youth population on issues that are of national and regional importance, such as the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), or the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).
Application and nomination forms are available at the NCYD, and at the website of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture: www.moeyc.gov.jm. Completed forms must be sent to the Head Office of the NCYD, located at Caenwood Centre, 4 Arnold Road, Kingston.
