The Full Story

Ocho Rios Primary School in St. Ann has received 25 new computers from businessman and philanthropist, Kumar Sujanani.

At a ceremony on June 4, the Dell computers, with HP monitors, were set up and installed in a fully air-conditioned room at the school, which the businessman also retrofitted.

Mr. Sujanani, known for his long-standing commitment to supporting charitable causes across the parish, expressed his joy in providing the school with “a fully equipped computer lab and brand-new computers”, pointing to the importance of students having access to technology for their educational pursuits.

He said the new computers would create a conducive environment for learning and academic development.

“These computers will also ensure that students here at Ocho Rios Primary are not at a disadvantage as it relates to information technology or to be left behind in their quest for knowledge. We are moving rapidly into a digital age, and we have to get our students on track as early as possible,” Mr. Sujanani said.

For his part, Mayor of St. Ann’s Bay, Councillor Michael Belnavis, praised Mr. Sujanani for his “philanthropic gesture”, emphasising the significance of community involvement and giving back.

He encouraged other stakeholders to follow suit and “contribute to the betterment” of the community, citing the transformative power of such initiatives in today’s “technology-driven” world.

For her part, Custos of St. Ann, Norma Walters, lauded Mr. Sujanani’s donation as a legacy project with a far-reaching positive impact on the parish, emphasising the lasting benefits that the new computer lab and devices would bring to the students and the broader Ocho Rios community.

Principal of the school, Suzette Wilson, said the initiative by Mr. Sujanani reflects a commendable dedication to community development and education in Jamaica, adding that his efforts are set to make a significant impact on the learning experience and future prospects of countless students, paving the way for a brighter and more technologically literate generation.

“Mr. Sujanani’s vision extends beyond mere donations. His goal, as he clearly states, is to equip students with the necessary tools and skills in information technology, particularly focusing on the younger generation. By providing access to modern computing resources, he is bridging the technological gap and ensuring that students are well prepared for the digital age,” she said.

Mr. Sujanani is owner of the Gem Palace Duty Free Stores, with other locations in Ocho Rios and Falmouth.
