KINGSTON — The Organization of American States (OAS) has hailed Jamaica’s smooth transition of leadership.

In a release Thursday (October 27), the Permanent Council of the OAS sent a message congratulating Prime Minister, Hon Andrew Holness, on his appointment.

“With this smooth transition of leadership in Government, Jamaica has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to democracy,” Chairman of the Council, Bayney Karran, said in the release. He also extended the Council’s “fullest cooperation and best wishes” to the Prime Minister.

Alternative Representative of Jamaica, Lylen Ann Scott, thanked the Council for the message and recalled that the swearing-in ceremony of the new Prime Minister represented a significant moment in Jamaica’s democracy, “as it was a smooth and peaceful transition of leadership.”

She explained that the new cabinet members have been confirmed, and assured that the messages sent by the Council and by Secretary General José Miguel Insulza would be transmitted to the competent authorities. She also noted that Mr. Holness is the “youngest Prime Minister in the history of Jamaica”.

The primary duty of the OAS Permanent Council is to monitor the maintenance of friendly relations among member states, and assist them in the peaceful settlement of their disputes.
