The Full Story

The National Works Agency (NWA) has closed Marcus Garvey Drive in Kingston to vehicular traffic.

The area, which is prone to flooding, is being closed as the agency carries out emergency remedial work.

“It’s a pre-emptive move and is based on what we experienced at the Tivoli Gully, which overflowed its banks yesterday (Oct. 2), carrying down a lot of debris and garbage,” Director of Communications at the NWA, Stephen Shaw told JIS News.

“Shoemaker Gulley also had a similar challenge recently and we expect that the impending hurricane will see more water coming down in the Tivoli Gully so we’re creating a facility, which will take the additional storm water out to sea,” he told JIS News.

He informed that motorists, on reaching Industrial Terrace, are being directed along Spanish Town Road and East Avenue.

Mr. Shaw said the work will not be completed till after the passage of Hurricane Matthew.
