A two-classroom building to be used as the new Nutshell Basic School in North Western St. Catherine, was handed over by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) on January 13.
The new building will house 40 students and two teachers, and was constructed at a cost of $10.37 million. The school has also been equipped with furniture, a refrigerator, a gas stove and play equipment on the grounds.
Board Director at JSIF, Marcia Edwards explained that a total of $8.97 million to assist with the project was sourced from the World Bank, under its National Community Development Programme.
The community of Nutshell also played a vital role in the construction phase, as members provided a total of $1.40 million in sweat equity, enabling the project to be completed. This included labour for site clearance, security for material and equipment, digging a pit, landscaping and electrical and water connections.
“This achievement represents the fruit of a successful partnership between the Nutshell community and JSIF, which we hope will be maintained,”Mrs. Edwards said.
Member of Parliament for the area, Robert Pickersgill explained that the Nutshell project was part of the Government’s thrust in enhancing the early childhood education process.
“The Government has allocated a large sum of money to education, much of it going towards early childhood education and so this new basic school fits well into those plans,” he said.
Mr. Pickersgill, who is also Minister of Transport and Works, noted that the area has also benefited from several JSIF projects, including the Orange Field Basic School, the Cool Shade to Mexico Road rehabilitation project, Ewarton and Folly Ground Primary School projects, the Time and Patience Primary School expansion project, Pennington domestic water supply, Top Hill to Lemon Hall road upgrading project, and the Jericho and York Street Primary School upgrading projects, amounting to more than $70 million.
The Nutshell Basic School was built on land donated by the WINDALCO bauxite and alumina company.
