The Full Story

Director of Human Resources at the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), Dr. David Knight, is urging local, non-profit organisations to evolve to meet current needs and find new areas where they can be of service.

He gave the charge while addressing the Jamaica Junior Chamber International- Jamaica (JCI) 2024 National Convention on Sunday (October 6), at the  Insurance College of Jamaica in Kingston.

Non-profit organisations are legal entities organised and operated for a collective, public or social benefit, as opposed to profit making, and include charitable, religious, and political organisations, and private foundations.

They are tax-exempt entities that are supported by individuals, corporations, and government entities.

Dr. Knight said that non-profits perform important work as advocates, lobbying for and representing the interests of underserved groups.

They also play a critical role in creating solutions that address socio-economic needs, and provide opportunities for disadvantaged and marginalised communities, he added.

He noted that while these organisations work primarily in the areas of education, health, and social services, there are other areas where they can make an impact, such as climate change.

He urged these bodies to engage with the Government and other critical stakeholders, such as the Council of Voluntary Social Services (CVSS), to address social issues and remain relevant.

“Find new places and spaces to serve. Partner with businesses, civil society and with the under-represented communities to ensure that the country achieves the sustainable development goals which centre on people, planet and prosperity,” he said.

Dr. Knight further encouraged these entities to apply for grants when they are available, and to tap into the expertise of their membership to provide solutions.

“Learn from other non-profit organisations both locally and internationally. Adopt the best practices, collaborate with stakeholders and make new connections. Evaluate your effectiveness or you may end up becoming redundant,” he advised.

“Demonstrate accountability, good governance and transparency. Utilise and develop professional volunteers and competent paid staff. The time has passed where non-profits can survive with just volunteer staff,” he added.

The JCI Convention was from October 5 to 6, held under the theme ‘Together We Rise: Reflecting on Progress, Inspiring Change’.

The JCI is a non-profit member-based leadership development organisation aimed at empowering young leaders to create positive change.
