Jamaica’s two major airports will remain open Saturday (Oct. 25) for scheduled flights as Tropical Storm Melissa approaches the island.
However, the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston will be closed after Saturday’s last scheduled arriving flight.
Minister of Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, Hon. Daryl Vaz, who gave the update during a special press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister, assured that delayed flights will be accommodated.
“So, my recommendation for those who want to get back to or get out of Jamaica is to change your arrangements to get out today,” he advised.
The Minister said that a meeting is set for 2:00 p.m. with MBJ Airports Limited, during which plans will be made about the closure of Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St. James.
“This is important for our locals to get in and out and also for our tourism industry. As we speak, the hotels are in communication through the Ministry of Tourism to communicate with the airlines to make sure they increase their capacity… to get out as many of those who are vacationing in Jamaica and want to [leave] before the storm,” Minister Vaz said.
A Hurricane Warning is now in effect for Jamaica as Tropical Storm Melissa nears hurricane strength and is expected to intensify today.
