Nigerian President in Jamaica for Two-Day State Visit


President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, and First Lady, Her Excellency Dame Patience Jonathan, are in the island for a two-day state visit.

The Nigerian Defence Force aircraft, which transported the visitors, touched down at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston at about 9:30 a.m. this morning (Aug. 2), to a 21-gun salute from the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).

Governor-General, His Excellency, the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen and Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, were on hand to welcome the Nigerians.

The welcome party also included: Chief of State Protocol, Ambassador Elinor Sherlock; Cabinet Secretary, Ambassador Douglas Saunders; Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Hon. A.J. Nicholson; Minister of Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Robert Pickersgill; Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator Hon. Sandrea Falconer; Minister of Justice, Senator Hon. Mark Golding; Minister or Youth and Culture, Hon. Lisa Hanna; Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Angella Brown-Burke; and Director of Emergency Disaster Management and Special Services in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Marion Bullock DuCasse.

Dr. Jonathan is in the island for the country’s Golden Independence Jubilee. This is his first visit to Jamaica.

Following his departure from the airport, the President attended a Special Commemorative Session of Parliament at Gordon House. Later today, he is expected to tour the Marcus Mosiah Garvey Multimedia Museum, downtown Kingston and visit the Jamaica 50 Golden Jubilee Village where he will be entertained by a cultural presentation.

On Friday, August 3, the President is expected to call on the Governor-General and hold bilateral talks with Mrs. Simpson-Miller. He will then call on the Leader of the Opposition, Andrew Holness and will be a Guest of Honour at a State Dinner hosted by the Governor-General.

Dr. Jonathan and the First Lady will depart the island later that afternoon.
