The Full Story

The National Irrigation Commission (NIC) is urging farmers who utilise its services to stay connected with the entity’s social media platforms for critical updates.

Public Relations Specialist at the Commission, Christeen Forbes, said that these platforms are a two-way street, as farmers also can reach out to the NIC to report problems and express concerns.

“We’re on all major social media platforms, @NICJamaicaltd. We recently launched our WhatsApp channel, which we’re encouraging our farmers to get on board so they can have real-time information [especially on] service disruptions, general services, and just what exactly the NIC is doing at that point in time. So, we would really encourage our farmers to get on to our WhatsApp and stay connected with us,” she said.

Ms. Forbes was speaking at a recent JIS Think Tank, held at the Agency’s Television Department, 5-9 South Odeon Avenue in Kingston.

She said that although many of the NIC’s customers are older and not on traditional social media sites, they do have a WhatsApp number.

“We are encouraging them to stay connected with us, We’re here to serve, and we are here to help them to boost their food production. Our offices are open, and our team members are ready and waiting to assist in the recovery – in their recovery,” she said.

The primary role of the NIC is to provide irrigation services to the agricultural sector. Through its systems, water is also made available to some industrial and commercial operations.
