The National Housing Trust (NHT) remains dedicated to preserving the country’s historical and cultural heritage, while undertaking new housing developments across the island, says Senior General Manager for Construction and Development, Brian Saunders.
Addressing a recent Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Think Tank in Kingston, he said that through careful planning with key government agencies, including the National Heritage Trust, the NHT ensures that historical sites are respected.
“The significance of our history and our heritage is something that is not lost on the Trust. So, in the first step of the planning process, the NHT writes to all the agencies of government to get their comments on our intended housing developments before we begin construction,” Mr. Saunders noted.
The Senior General Manager said collaborating with these organisations ensures that zoning regulations and heritage considerations are properly addressed for each proposed development.
“Insofar as the areas that we have developed are zoned for residential purposes, if there is any section of a development that has heritage significance, we would make contact with the National Heritage Trust,” he pointed out.
“Currently, we have one project out in St. Catherine where an area was identified, and that area was subdivided and given to the National Heritage Trust. They are seeking now, based on a request from them, to approve their consultancy to redevelop or to further secure the particular area, which has an old castle,” Mr. Saunders shared.
He emphasised that beyond building houses, the NHT seeks to foster strong communities while honouring Jamaica’s past.
The NHT will continue to integrate heritage preservation into its housing projects, ensuring that Jamaica’s rich history remains a vital part of the nation’s future developments.
The Trust is a government-established organisation that provides low-interest loans to contributors who wish to build, buy, or improve their homes, to increase affordable housing and improve the quality of life for Jamaicans.
