The National Housing Trust (NHT) has completed 40 projects under its upgrading of 100 schemes built between 1976 and 1986, with another 47 at various stages of completion in 14 parishes.
This disclosure came from Senior Project Manager at the NHT, Jacqueline Johnson, while speaking in Mitchell Town, Clarendon, recently.
She said that the renovation and rehabilitation of older housing projects ensure that they meet “modern standards for safety”.
“The scope of works on these projects is varied and includes repairs and upgrades to water, roads and drainage infrastructure, disaster mitigation, and the construction of social amenities, such as community centres,” Mrs. Johnson told the audience.
She added that the role of the NHT is to provide affordable housing solutions for Jamaicans and to support the development of “necessary infrastructure” that is critical to the sustainability of communities.
Instituted in 2017, the programme also focuses on river training, sewerage, water, roadways, kerbs and other infrastructure.
The NHT is partnering with agencies such as the National Works Agency (NWA), the National Water Commission (NWC), the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, and Municipal Corporations to undertake the projects.
The NHT was set up by Government to lend money at low interest rates to contributors who wish to build, buy, or improve their houses, or wish to buy or build on lots. The Trust also develops housing schemes for sale to contributors and provides low-cost financing to private developers.
