The Full Story

The National Fisheries Authority (NFA) is encouraging fishers to take the necessary precautions, as they assess damage to their equipment following the passage of Hurricane Beryl.

Executive Director, Dr. Gavin Bellamy, says Alligator Pond was badly affected along with fishing beaches in St Elizabeth.

Dr. Bellamy told JIS News that he is awaiting a full report on the damage from the technical team to determine the extent of support needed by affected fishers.

“First of all I want to advise them to take precaution and be safe. Start doing their evaluations and reach out to the NFA outstations and the extension officers so that we can know how we can assist them in their recovery,” he said.

Dr. Bellamy added that fishers have a responsibility to properly secure their vessels and tools, while urging them to listen out for and pay attention to weather advisories issued during the course of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.

Persons in need of technical support can call the NFA at (876) 927-1731-50.
