The Ministry of Legal and Constitutional Affairs is to place emphasis on the Government’s legislative agenda and on legal and constitutional reform.

“The creation of this new Ministry may be regarded as the first serious attempt by any government to holistically revisit the legal and constitutional infrastructure of Jamaica, in 60 years,” said Governor General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, as he delivered the Throne Speech in Parliament, today (February 10).

He noted, further, that the Ministry has been tasked to reform the laws of Jamaica and start the process of reviewing the Constitution and the process to shift Jamaica’s status as a Constitutional Monarchy.

“One critical piece of legislation in need of reform is the Bail Act. New provisions will be enacted in relation to the grant or denial of bail and related matters,” the Governor General said.

The Throne Speech was delivered under the theme ‘Building Our Jamaica: Peace, Opportunity and Prosperity’.
