Cuba’s new Ambassador to Jamaica, His Excellency Bernardo Guanche Hernandez, says his country is looking to deepen cooperation with Jamaica in the area of trade.

“The bilateral relations between our two countries have reached its highest points so far and we are considering ways to improve and strengthen these relations even more. We think that we could further this relation specifically in the field of trade,” he said.

Ambassador Hernandez was part of a delegation at a recent Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Think Tank, to discuss the upcoming Second Meeting of Energy Ministers of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) scheduled to take place from October 24 to 25 at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, St. James.

He replaces Yuri Gala Lopez, whose four -year tour of duty ended in September. Ambassador Hernandez expressed appreciation for the assistance from the Government and people of Jamaica since taking office over the past month.

“We have received love and respect from every Jamaican we have met either on the streets or from organisations. Likewise, Cubans feel the same love and respect for Jamaica,” he said. “When Usain Bolt wins one of his races that is also a victory for Cuba. I wish you could see the happy faces of the Cubans when Usain Bolt wins a race how they would applaud and look so happy,” he continued.

He also expressed gratitude for Jamaica’s continued support to Cuba in relation to the commercial, economic and financial embargo partially imposed by the United States on the country.

Despite the embargo, Ambassador Hernandez said that Cuba continues to enjoy cooperation with about 70 countries, including Jamaica, in the fields of sport, education and health care.
