NCYD Continues to Reach Out
August 27, 2008The Full Story
The National Centre for Youth Development (NCYD), continues to reach out to young persons across Jamaica, to help steer them in a direction to achieve positive growth.
In this regard, the St. Ann Branch of the NCYD, in collaboration with ‘Black Family Productions’, will be staging a back-to-school treat and intervention session, to promote oneness among young persons in the Exchange community of Ocho Rios.
The event, which is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, August 27, is expected to see hundreds of young persons coming together on the grounds of the Colour Blue Lawn in Middle Street, Exchange, to be feted and informed on topics, such as HIV/AIDS; as well as enjoy positive entertainment, through the performances of various artistes.
Youth Empowerment Officer attached to the St. Ann NCYD, Anisa Wilson, told JIS News, that the St. Ann NCYD has been working with approximately 70 youth clubs in the parish and that the organisation has been carrying out effective empowerment sessions with these clubs.
“We try to ensure that the young people in these youth clubs are aware of all the Government agencies and how these agencies can assist them,” Miss Wilson said, pointing out that the National Youth Service (NYS) and HEART Trust/NTA, have been very instrumental in the many intervention sessions that have been planned to reach out to the young persons of St. Ann.
Reflecting on the work of the St. Ann NCYD in the years 2006 and 2007, she noted that much was accomplished in those years, with the successful staging of the International Students Day in 2006 and the National Marching Band Competition in 2007.
Turning to the event planned for August 27, Miss Wilson said that it promises to be exciting, educational and entertaining.
“We have the Ministry of National Security, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, and the Social Development Commission (SDC) on board,” she said, adding that the young persons would be encouraged, to become active participants in the intervention sessions with representatives from the various Ministries, agencies and other organisations.
“We need the support for our young people, because they’ve got potential and all we need to do is to harness it,” she said, and appealed to members of the business community and the public at large, to come out and support the event.
