The Full Story

The National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC) is underscoring the importance of proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of older persons, as Jamaica prepares for Hurricane Beryl.

Executive Director, Cassandra Morrison, told JIS News that “with a commitment to safeguarding our senior population during potentially hazardous weather events, the NCSC urges families, caregivers, and communities to prioritise the wellbeing of this vulnerable group.”

The following precautions are important:

• Ensure that the elderly have a stocked supply kit, including non-perishable food, medications, medical supplies, and copies of important documents.

• Develop a communication plan with elderly family members and neighbours.

• Ensure they have access to means of communication, such as cell phones or emergency radios, and establish contact procedures in case of evacuation.

• Identify safe evacuation routes and shelters that accommodate seniors and individuals with special needs.

• Coordinate transportation arrangements in advance, if necessary, and ensure familiarity with local evacuation protocols.

• Prioritise medical needs by securing an ample supply of medications and medical equipment.

• Maintain contact with healthcare providers to arrange for continued care, and have a list of emergency contacts readily accessible.

• Secure homes and properties to minimise potential hazards. Trim trees and secure outdoor furniture, ensuring that surroundings are clear of objects that could pose a risk during high winds or flooding.

• During these stressful times, provide emotional support and reassurance to older persons.

• Maintain regular communication to offer comfort and address concerns about the impending storm.

“Our senior citizens are particularly vulnerable during hurricanes and other natural disasters. It is crucial that we come together as a community to ensure their safety and well-being by taking proactive measures and showing unwavering support,” Mrs. Morrison said.

The NCSC is dedicated to advocating for the rights and promoting the wellbeing of elderly individuals across the island.

Through education, outreach and policy advocacy, the NCSC works to ensure that seniors receive the support and resources necessary to live fulfilling and secure lives.
